Responsibilities

Role Overview

The Vice President of Transportation Claims leads the management of complex auto and general liability claims arising from the Company’s transportation operations. This role oversees both an internal team of risk professionals and a third-party claims administrator, balancing strategic leadership with hands-on management of the Company’s claims portfolio.

Safety Partnership and Risk Mitigation

The claims team partners closely with safety and operations to support best-in-class incident response, strengthen enterprise risk mitigation, and reinforce continuous improvement across the organization.

As leader of the claims function, this role will monitor performance against established goals, identify opportunities to improve outcomes, and lead initiatives that advance operational effectiveness and risk reduction.

Legal and Litigation Management

The Vice President of Transportation Claims works closely with MV’s legal team and outside defense counsel to develop and execute case strategy from pre-suit investigation through trial and appeal. The role requires experience managing complex, high-exposure matters and a proven ability to resolve cases effectively in mediation and trial settings.

Executive Advisory and Communication

As a strategic partner to executive leadership, this role leads case review meetings with the C-suite and provides Board of Directors updates on industry trends, litigation matters, and case management. A successful candidate will bring executive presence, sound judgment, and the ability to influence decision-making at all levels of the organization.

Key Responsibilities

      • Lead an internal team of risk professionals responsible for claims handling and oversight.
      • Oversee a company-dedicated third-party administrator responsible for claims adjudication, payments, reporting, and service-level performance.

      • Strengthen reporting workflows and establish disciplined processes for coverage issues, reservations of rights, indemnity obligations, and allocation disputes.
      • Ensure clear communication and escalation protocols for management, insurance carriers, brokers, and other key stakeholders.
      • Evaluate liability exposure, damages modeling, settlement posture, and trial risk, and provide clear, business-oriented recommendations.
      • Manage cash flow forecasting for claims settlements and defense counsel spend.
      • Provide practical, business-focused guidance to Operations and Safety on claims prevention, incident handling, and risk mitigation.
      • Support significant incident response and investigation, including coordination with onsite response teams.
      • Develop and deliver claims-related training for field operations.
      • Track KPIs and identify systemic risk trends, recommending proactive mitigation measures.
